Anisakiasis (an·i·sa·ki·a·sis)

Anisakiasis is parasitic disease caused by the
accidental ingestion of larvae of the nematodes
(roundworms) Anisakis simplex and
Pseudoterranova decipiens. This occurs by eating raw
or undercooked infected marine fish, squid or octopus.
Within hours after ingestion, infected larvae penetrate
the gastric and intestinal mucosa and symptoms of
violent abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur.
Direct transmission from person to person does not
occur. Treatment is surgical or endoscopic removal.
